Clinical information
Understanding the diagnosis
Stenosis can result from degenerative changes in the discs, joints and ligaments. Pain intensity does not always reflect the degree of spinal-cord involvement.
The aim of assessment is to identify clinical signs of myelopathy, locate the compression and examine spinal alignment.
Symptoms and context
Signs of possible spinal-cord involvement
- Loss of hand dexterity
- Balance problems or falls
- Progressive difficulty walking
- Weakness or stiffness in the arms or legs
- Urinary changes associated with other neurological signs
Case review
Second opinion
A second opinion can review the relative urgency, the number of levels involved and the proposed surgical approach. Rapid neurological deterioration requires priority medical attention.
