Cervical disc herniation

A cervical disc herniation can compress a nerve root or the spinal cord. Examination and imaging must be correlated with the symptoms before treatment is considered.

Clinical information

Understanding the diagnosis

Nerve-root compression can cause pain from the neck into the arm, tingling, sensory loss or weakness. Spinal-cord involvement may cause loss of hand dexterity or walking problems.

MRI shows the anatomy, but a disc finding alone does not explain every symptom. The clinical distribution helps identify the responsible level.
